LEBANON, Tenn. – Sophomore Sarah Beth Foote posted an opening-round 84 and is third while freshman Kayla Smith is one shot behind and tied for fourth after the first day of the Union University Spring Invitational at Wingfoot Golf Club in Union City, Tenn.

Foote was just one shot off her career-best round at Cumberland on the par-72, 5861-yard course. The Selmer, Tenn., native posted nine-hole scores of 43-41 and trails Bethel University’s Amelia Ray by three shots for the overall lead.

Smith posted the same score on the front nine and was just one shot behind on the back nine on a cool and windy day in west Tennessee. The Greenbrier, Tenn., native is in a group of four players tied for fourth and four shots off the lead.

Sophomore K.C. McGinley carded the second-best score of the day on the front nine with a 41, but came home in 45 and is tied for eighth after shooting an 86. Sophomore Allyson Agee is two shots behind McGinley and tied for 10th after her opening 88, while freshman Lindsey Taylor is 19th after the first round.

Bethel leads the team scores by three shots over Cumberland and 12 shots over Trevecca Nazarene. The tournament concludes Friday. The Bulldogs will next play in the TranSouth Championships on May 2-3 at Blytheville Country Club in Blytheville, Ark.
