Smith takes low medalist, CU wins third tourney

LEBANON, Tenn. – Sophomore Kayla Smith carded a career-best 77, winning low medalist honors, and Cumberland won its third straight team title at the Martin Methodist Invitational on Thursday at Ross Creek Landing Golf Club in Clifton, Tenn.

Smith edged Bethel University’s Baillie Johnson by one shot and Bethel’s Amelia Ray and teammate Katie Legge by three shots in the one-day event. It is the first individual title for the Greenbrier, Tenn., native at Cumberland.

Legge, a freshman, continued her consistent play, tying for third after shooting 80 on the par-72, 5,801-yard course at Ross Creek Landing. Junior Allyson Agee tied for fifth after shooting an 84 and juniors K.C. McGinley and Sarah Beth Foote both tied for seventh, carding an 85. Sophomore Lindsey Taylor finished ninth with an 86.

Cumberland edged Bethel in the team standings by three shots. The Bulldogs top four players all finished in the Top 7, while Bethel’s fourth player placed 10th.

Cumberland finishes the fall schedule October 31-November 1 at the RedHawk Classic at Lawrenceburg Country Club in Lawrenceburg, Tenn.
