Valverde cards 78, CU second at Blue Raider Classic

LEBANON, Tenn. – Freshman Raquel Romero Valverde carded an opening-round 78 and junior Abbey Burgdorf collected a 79, leading the Cumberland women’s golf team on Monday at the Blue Raider Classic in Columbia, Ky.

Valverde trails Lindsey Wilson’s Dacie Bolton by four strokes, but the Palafrugell, Spain, native stands in fourth place overall after the first round in which she posted 10 pars, tied for second most in the field. She also registered a pair of birdies on Monday.

Burgdorf is right behind, tied for fifth, after her 79 that included three birdies, while sophomore Delaney Lazenby recorded an opening-round 80 for eighth-place individually.

Junior Savanna Strode tallied 10 pars but struggled to an 83, tied for 10th, while sophomore Tessa Barto shot 91 in her first round of the fall, tied for 16th.

Cumberland shot 320 as a team, second behind Lindsey Wilson heading into Tuesday’s final round.
