LEBANON, Tenn. – Freshman Raquel Romero Valverde tied for low medalist honors and juniors Abbey Burgdorf and Morgan Stuckey each finished in the Top 5, leading the Cumberland women to a 16-stroke team victory at the RedHawk Invitational on Tuesday at Canebrake Club in Athens, Ala.
The Phoenix shot 304 on Monday, the lowest round by a Cumberland women’s team since Fall 2012, and followed that with a 311 on Tuesday for a 16-shot win over Union University. It marks the second team victory for CU this fall after taking top honors at the Unilever Freed-Hardeman Fall Invitational last month.
Valverde carded rounds of even-par 72 and four-over 76, tying Heather Gillenwaters from the University of Mobile at 148. Gillenwaters won a playoff with a par on the first hole. The two players led the field with seven birdies apiece and Valverde ranked first in par-4 and par-5 scoring for the tournament.
Burgdorf shot 75-74 to place third with a two-day total of 149, making four birdies and leading the field with 25 pars. She also posted an even-par score on the par-3’s and tied with Valverde at four-over on the par-4’s.
Stuckey finished fifth overall with scores of 76-77, collecting five birdies and 22 pars along the way and tying with Valverde and one other play at two-under par on the par-5’s.
Junior Savanna Strode shot 81-84, tying for 18th, with three birdies and 19 pars, while sophomore Delaney Lazenby carded rounds of 85-84, tying for 24th, making 17 pars over the two days.
