Romero Valverde, CU women both lead at St. Simons Island
Freshman Raquel Romero Valderde posted a first-round 74 to take the lead and help the Phoenix women to a four-shot advantage Monday at the Coastal Georgia Winter Invitational.

LEBANON, Tenn. – Freshman Raquel Romero Valverde carded an opening-round two-over par 74 and Cumberland’s women hold a four-shot advantage at the top of the leaderboard after the first round of the Coastal Georgia Winter Invitational on Monday in St. Simons Island, Ga.

Romero Valderde has a one stroke lead over Eastern Florida State’s Lauren Holder and is two shots ahead of St. Andrews University’s Lydia Randell on the King and Price Golf Course heading into Tuesday’s final round.

Juniors Morgan Stuckey, Abbey Burgdorf and Savanna Strode all stand in the Top 20 after the opening round, helping Cumberland to the first-place team standing. The Phoenix lead SCAD-Atlanta by four shots and are eight ahead of Faulkner University and Thomas University.

Stuckey shot an opening-round 81, tied for 11th, while Burgdorf finished with an 82, tied for 14th, and Strode was one stroke behind her with an 83, tied for 18th. Sophomore Anna Leigh Cleveland posted a first-round 90 on Monday.
