Strode cards first-round 80, CU women fourth at Skyhawk Invite

LEBANON, Tenn. – Junior Savanna Strode carded an opening-round 80 and junior Abbey Burgdorf shot 81, leading the Cumberland women’s golf team into fourth place on Monday at the Skyhawk Invitational in Callaway Gardens, Ga.

Strode is tied for 10th after the first round and just five shots from second place. Point University’s Courtney Lowery shot two-under par 70 and was the only player under par on Monday.

Burgdorf is tied for 14th and just one shot behind Strode, while junior Morgan Stuckey posted an opening-round 83, tied for 19th, and freshman Raquel Romero Valverde registered a first-round 84, tied for 24th.

Those four scores helped Cumberland into fourth place heading into Tuesday’s final round. The Phoenix are just seven strokes from second place Point University (321) and six behind Milligan College (322).

Sophomore Anna Leigh Cleveland tied for 37th on Monday with a first-round 87, while sophomore Tessa Barto shot 100 and stands 63rd.
