CU falls to No. 2 McKendree
LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland’s 16th-ranked wrestling team fought long and hard, but second-ranked McKendree University won three close matches and had two big victories en route to a 23-12 win Friday night at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center.
The Bulldogs (4-5) missed a couple of chances to post victories and take control of the match, especially at 141 and 149.
CU’s Anthony Melillo and McKendree’s Jermaine Waye went back-and-forth throughout the match and were tied 4-all with just 20 seconds remaining in the third period. Melillo got one point and looked to have the match in hand until Waye made a move just before the final buzzer, netting two points, and stealing a victory for the Bearcats.
Bulldog Corey Bleaken got off to a bad start and dug a big hole against Ryan Jahn, but Bleaken almost made it up before running out of time and dropping a 9-7 decision.
Cumberland did win four matches on the evening, with DeSean Willis, James Casadaban, Trey Myers and BJ Stewart all posting victories.
Willis got the match started well for the Bulldogs in a hardfought 4-2 triumph at 125 over Ryan Guillett. Casadaban blanked Matt Beasley, 6-0, at 157. Myers posted a 5-1 triumph over Josh Bryant at 174, while Stewart defeated Cedric Powell, 9-5, at the heavyweight spot.
CU hosts the Cumberland Open all day Saturday at the Dallas Floyd, with Campbellsville, University of the Cumberlands, Chattanooga, Gardner-Webb, McKendree, Oklahoma City, Marion Military and Austin Peay all competing.
