Stewart wins at Ohio Northern Invite

LEBANON, Tenn. – Junior BJ Stewart won the heavyweight division, junior Mikey Davis finished second at 141 and senior Eric Metzler and junior James Casadaban both placed third, leading Cumberland’s wrestling team at the Ohio Northern Invitational this past weekend in Ada, Ohio.
Freshman Noah Hunt also placed seventh at 125 while sophomores Andy Shoultz and Neil Birt finished eighth, respectively, at 149 and 141 for the Bulldogs.
Stewart, who won his second tournament of the season and upped his overall mark to 19-3 this year, pinned Wilmington College’s Zach Eckstrom at 1:41 before winning by major decision over West Liberty State’s J.D. Ramsey, 13-1. The Rome, Ga., native defeated Mount Saint Joseph’s Sean Jameson, 5-1, in the semifinals and won 5-3 against Wilmington’s Adam Salyers in the finals.
Davis won his first four matches before dropping a 3-2 decision in the finals. The Columbus, Ohio, native posted a major decision against Lycoming College’s Eric Grecco, 14-6, and another major decision over Olivet College’s Kenneth Richmond, 13-1. Davis then defeated Mount Saint Joseph’s Eric Meyer, 2-1, and Ashland University’s Kyle Kanaga, 4-3, before losing to Olivet’s Vince Tucker in the finals.
Metzler took third place at 197, going 4-1 in the tournament. The New Orleans, La., native won his first two outings – by Fall at 1:12 over Limestone College’s Charles Webber and 6-4 against Campbellsville’s Diante Wright – before dropping a 5-0 decision to West Liberty’s Mitch Knapp. Metzler came back with a pin at 3:00 over Ohio Northern’s David Jones and a 9-4 triumph against Wright for third place.
Casadaban also went 4-1 in the tournament, placing third at 157. The Metairie, La., native won by major decision over Ashland’s Hunter Pool, 14-3, and pinned Lycoming’s Colton Eyer at 6:45. Heidelberg College’s Zach Mizer defeated Casadaban by Fall at 4:54, but the Bulldog junior came back with a 12-7 victory over Olivet’s Ben Hitchcock and an 8-3 triumph against Limestone’s Mikel Bush.
Cumberland hosts Lindsey Wilson in a dual match Friday, December 18 at 1 p.m. at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center. Full results from the Ohio Northern Invitational may be found at
