Rogers records upset as Bulldogs sweep CBC
Bradley Rogers posted a 6-3 victory over No. 8 John Lopez Thursday.

LEBANON, Tenn. – In its most dominating performance of the season, Cumberland University earned pins in four matches as the Bulldogs swept their way to a 57-0 victory over Central Baptist College on Thursday night at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center.

Eddie Ortiz, Dexter Bushart, Corey Bleaken and Zeke Hunt all pinned their opponents, but the match of the night may have been saved for the end when Bradley Rogers upset No. 8 John Lopez in the closing seconds.

Rogers and Lopez battled to a 0-0 tie through the first period. Lopez began the second period down and took eight seconds to earn an escape and the first points of the match.

Rogers, who is the reigning Mid-South Conference Wrestler of the Week, started the third period down and knotted the match four seconds in, breaking free from the grasp of the No. 8 heavyweight. With 1:22 remaining Lopez scored a takedown to take the 3-1 lead. Rogers escaped to make it 3-2 with just under a minute left and scored the winner with a reversal with just 15 seconds on the clock. Back points made the final 6-3 as Cumberland finished the sweep.

Rogers earned Music City Star of the Game honors.

Cumberland started the night with a 6-0 lead after Zach Shelton received a forfeit at 125. Slade Madden, Scott Stewart and Kyle Frazier also took forfeits from the shorthanded Mustangs.

Ortiz doubled the CU lead when he pinned Nate Waltrip 19 seconds into the second period. The redshirt junior dominated the early stages of the match, taking an 8-0 lead midway through the first period. The Wesley Chapel, Fla., native was leading 10-2 when he earned the fall.

Bushart continued the Bulldogs’ perfect run to begin the dual, pinning Dontavious Gardenhire in 2:31. The match was tied at four apiece when the pin occurred.

At 149 Andy Shoultz fell behind 2-0, before reeling off nine straight points. The Petersburg, Ind., earned the victory when Christian Binginisi was forced to take a medical forfeit with an ankle injury in the third period.

Bleaken, who is ranked fourth at 157, had little trouble with Nate Vandevelde, claiming a 10-1 lead through half of the first period. Four seconds after a takedown, the Clifton, N.J., native had his opponent pinned with 1:24 left on the clock in the opening period to give Cumberland a 30-0 lead.

At 165 Hunt needed nearly the entire seven minutes to keep CU perfect on the night. The freshman looked to have to settle for a major decision victory, but a pin with 4.9 seconds left in the match added six points to the CU lead. The Dacula, Ga., native led 8-1 with more than four minutes of riding time when the match ended.

The next three matches were forfeits, setting up Rogers’ showdown with Central Baptists’ only ranked competitor.

Cumberland is back in action Saturday when the Bulldogs host the University of the Cumberlands at 1 p.m.
