LEBANON, Tenn. – Michael Gonzalez finished seventh at 149 and Eddie Ortiz posted four victories while Zeke Hunt and Jesse Green each recorded three, leading the Cumberland wrestling team over the weekend at the Ohio Northern Invitational in Ada, Ohio.
Gonzalez defeated Washington and Lee University’s Alexander Reed by Major Decision, 18-5, in the first round at 149 before dropping a 5-3 Decision to Ashland University’s Matt Meuer.
The freshman then put together three straight victories, including by Fall at 3:52 over Lindsey Wilson’s Seth Taylor; by Medical Forfeit against teammate Jake Scott; and by Fall at 1:16 against another teammate, Andy Shoultz. Gonzalez lost 7-3 to Olivet College’s Gage Pederson but defeated Meuer by Medical Forfeit to place seventh.
Shoultz won his first two matches in the weight class – 5-2 over Olivet’s Kyle Witgen and 9-4 against Ohio Northern University’s Brandon Howes. He then dropped a 13-4 Major Decision to West Liberty University’s Art Hobley before the Fall against Gonzalez.
Scott lost his first match at 149 by Major Decision, 13-4, to Alma College’s James Carey but bounced back with a victory by Fall at 2:39 over Washington and Lee’s Brian Ross. Scott then defeated Ohio Northern’s Patrick Piszker, 7-4, before the Medical Forfeit to Gonzalez.
Ortiz posted a 4-2 mark at 125, winning 8-3 over Mercyhurst College’s Timothy Stanton before dropping a 5-2 Decision to Ohio Northern’s Jerome Pasquale. In the wrestleback the senior defeated Ohio Northern’s Cole Cochran, 11-9; Thiel College’s Nick Hart, 13-5; and Lindsey Wilson’s Andy Lenz, 4-3; before Falling at 2:26 to Olivet’s Esteban Gonzales.
Freshman Ethyn Holbrook lost his first match at 133 to Lindsey Wilson’s eighth-ranked Keith Klink by Fall at 5:00, but rebounded with a pair of victories – by Fall at 4:08 against Mercyhurst’s Ian Abplanalp and 8-4 over West Liberty’s Sean Jordan. Holbrook then lost by Fall at 2:17 to West Liberty’s Dillon Nolte.
At 165 Hunt won by Fall at 5:28 against College of Mount St. Joseph’s Matt Collins but then dropped a 5-4 Decision to Ohio Northern’s Michael Letcher. The CU sophomore bounced back with a Medical Forfeit against Mercyhurst’s Austin Roland and a 7-0 Decision versus Washington and Lee’s David Dennis before dropping a 10-7 Decision to Campbellsville University’s Paul Gryniuk.
Sophomore Scott Stewart lost by Fall at 3:47 to Mercyhust’s Bryson Hall at 174 but defeated Mercyhurst’s Grant Chase, 3-2, and West Liberty’s Matt Littleton, 9-4, before losing by Technical Fall, 20-3, to College of Mount St. Joseph’s Nick Manning.
Green won his opening match at 197 by Major Decision, 15-7, over Heidelburg University’s Jonathan Gibson before dropping a 9-3 Decision to Ohio Northern’s Colton Zody. The CU sophomore then won an 8-0 Major Decision against Thiel’s Jeff Rockenstein and an 8-2 Decision over Waynesburg University’s Patrick Jennings before losing by Fall at 1:16 to Campbellsville’s Travis McIntosh.
Cumberland hosts 18th-ranked Shorter University on December 14 at Noon at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center.
