Hunt leads grapplers at CU Open

LEBANON, Tenn. – Zeke Hunt finished second at 165 and Eddie Ortiz, Shane Brown and Scott Stewart all placed third in their respective weight classes, leading the wrestling team at the Cumberland Open on Saturday at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center.

Matt Scheve also finished fourth for the Bulldogs at the annual event, which featured 10 other schools in the field.

Hunt won his first three matches at 165, by Fall at 3:19 over Mitchell Kithcart from the University of the Cumberlands as well as a 4-2 Decision against McKendree University’s Matt Beasley and a 5-3 Decision over Lindsey Wilson’s James Haywood. In the finals Hunt dropped an 11-4 Decision to Chattanooga’s John Lampe.

Ortiz lost his opening match at 125, a 6-3 Decision against UTC’s Manuel Ramirez, before rebounding with four straight wins, including three consecutive pins. Ortiz pinned King College’s Tanner Bates at 2:00, Lindsey Wilson’s Leo Wilson at 4:14 and Andrew Tillman from the Univ. of the Cumberlands at 3:00. He then won a Major Decision, 13-4, over LWC’s Kary Goff for third place.

Stewart also dropped his first match at 184, a 10-6 Decision to Joe Pittman, before posting four straight victories. He won a 7-4 Decision against Campbellsville University’s Travis McIntosh, a 4-2 Decision over Lindsey Wilson’s Andrew Hairston, and pinned Truett-McConnell’s Patrick Blankenship at 0:35. Stewart defeated McKendree’s Luis Alba with a 4-2 Decision in the third-place match.

Brown, wrestling unattached at 149, was pinned by McKendree’s Kyle Williams at 0:53 in his opening match, but came back to pin Charles Napier from the Univ. of the Cumberlands at 4:29 and Chattanooga’s Cole Dodd at 1:24. Brown won a 10-4 Decision over Campbellsville’s Ronte Burgess and pinned Missouri Baptist’s Edmond Ford at 5:45. In the third place match he posted a 10-3 Decision versus Campbellsville’s Kyle Terry.

Scheve recorded a 7-0 Decision against Chattanooga’s Michael Adkins before dropping an 8-4 Decision to Lindsey Wilson’s DaMonte Riley. Scheve posted a 12-2 Major Decision against Alexander Thomas from the Univ. of the Cumberlands before losing an 11-3 Major Decision to Chattanooga’s Devante Brown in the third place match.

Cumberland wrestles again this Friday at the Univ. of the Cumberlands at 5 p.m. Central Time and will take part in the 3rd Annual Mid-South Conference Championships on January 28 in Williamsburg, Ky.
