Scheve places second at Newberry

LEBANON, Tenn. – Matt Scheve finished second at 141 and Nick Sasfy and Ethyn Holbrook each posted victories, leading the Cumberland wrestling team Saturday at the Newberry Open in Newberry, S.C.

Scheve defeated Campbell University’s Garrett Scriviani by Decision, 8-6, and Campbell’s Anthony Chiles by Decision, 7-2, before losing in the finals to Campbell’s Ray Henson by Decision, 5-2.

Holbrook dropped his first match at 133 by Decision, 7-2, against The Citadel’s Aaron Hansen but came back with a pin of Limestone College’s Cody Cardinale at 1:22. Holbrook then lost by Decision, 9-2, to Truett-McConnell’s Gabe Miller.

Sasfy lost his first match by Decision, 5-3, to UNC-Pembroke’s Jake Ferguson but rebounded with a 7-1 Decision against Truett-McConnell’s Josh Cook and a 5-3 Decision versus Lindsey Wilson’s Cadyn McKeeth. The Citadel’s Kendall Hemmings won a Major Decision, 13-1, over Sasfy in the next match.

Cumberland will next compete in the NAIA East Qualifier on February 18 in Williamsburg, Ky.
