LEBANON, Tenn. – Eddie Ortiz, Nick Sasfy and Scott Stewart all won a pair of matches and Sasfy and Stewart finished fourth and fifth, respectively, leading the Cumberland wrestling team at the NAIA East Qualifier on Saturday in Williamsburg, Ky.
The Bulldogs finished seventh among nine teams in the event with 31.5 points.
Ortiz defeated Indiana Tech’s Andre Sanders by Decision, 6-0, at 125 before winning a 16-10 Decision over Indiana Tech’s Conner Hughes. But the senior lost by Technical Fall, 19-3, to Missouri Baptist’s 10th-ranked Gabriel Roman in the semifinals and dropped his final two outs by Medical Forfeit.
At 174 Sasfy lost a 13-9 Decision to Campbellsville University’s sixth-ranked Josh Ashbrook in the quarterfinals but rebounded with a 3-2 Decision over Purdue University-Calumet’s Mark Daugherty and pinned Shorter University’s eighth-ranked Raleigh Abbott at 0:54. In the fourth-place match he lost a 5-0 Decision to Lindsey Wilson’s James Haywood.
Stewart won his first match by Medical Forfeit before dropping a 3-2 Decision to Campbellsville’s ninth-ranked Allen Scruggs. He lost a 14-6 Major Decision against Indiana Tech’s Dustin Boyd before defeating Shorter’s Joseph Hinchman with an 11-6 Decision in the fifth-place match.
Participants along with the final regular season Top 25 poll and individual rankings will be announced this Tuesday. The 55th Annual NAIA National Championships are set for March 1-3 in Des Moines, Iowa.
