Four grapplers win opening matches

LEBANON, Tenn. – Matt Scheve, Michael Gonzalez, Zeke Hunt and Scott Stewart each won first round matches on Friday, leading the Cumberland wrestlers at the 2012 NAIA National Championships in Des Moines, Iowa. All eight of CU’s participants will take part in Thursday’s night session starting at 6:30 p.m.

Scheve won a 17-6 Major Decicision at 141 against Bacone College’s Tyler Klinkhammer but lost by Fall at 1:12 to second-ranked Anthony Varnell from the University of Great Falls in the second round. Scheve will battle Dickinson State’s Robert Meador in the wrestleback.

Gonzalez outlasted Wayland Baptist’s Chris Hart with a 6-5 Decision at 149 and will take on Grand View University’s top-ranked TJ Moen in the second round.

Hunt won a 6-4 Decision at 165 against Briar Cliff University’s Dillon Freeman and will battle Grand View’s No. 1-ranked Brad Lower in the second round.

Stewart posted a 15-13 Decision over Concordia University’s Seth Crane and will take on Southern Oregon’s third-ranked Austin Vanderford in the second round.

At 125 Eddie Ortiz lost a 6-2 Decision to Menlo College’s Drake Medieros and will take on Northwestern College’s Angelo Quintana in the backdraw. Jake Shirley dropped a 3-1 Decision to Dakota Wesleyan’s Kyle Gerlach at 157 and will take on Missouri Valley College’s Nico Martinez.

Nick Sasfy lost a 7-3 Decision to Menlo’s Nick Gill at 174 and will take on Oklahoma City University’s Tyson Campbell in the wrestleback. Cody Linton dropped his first match at 184, a 9-1 Major Decision, to Midland University’s No. 1-ranked Kody Kersten and will battle Missouri Valley’s Josh Manu in the backdraw.
