Gonzalez, Hunt stay alive in Des Moines

LEBANON, Tenn. – Michael Gonzalez and Zeke Hunt both posted a pair of victories in the wrestleback, keeping their hopes alive of earning All-America honors to lead Cumberland at the NAIA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.

Gonzalez and Hunt are the only two wrestlers still remaining in the field of eight that started yesterday morning for the Bulldogs. Both athletes will compete in the night session that started at 6 p.m. CT.

Gonzalez lost a 12-4 Major Decision to No. 1-ranked TJ Moen from Grand View University at 149 but won a pair of matches in the wrestleback. The freshman pinned Northwestern College’s Brett Gudeman at 3:20 and posted a 5-3 Decision over Hastings College’s Connor Blanco. He is set to face Dickinson State’s Bradley Steele in the night session.

Hunt was pinned at 165 by Grand View’s Brad Lower in 1:36. He also came back with two victories in the backdraw, winning a 3-2 Decision over Menlo College’s Adrian Gonzales and an 8-6 Decision versus Dakota Wesleyan’s Danny Hutcheson. He will face Morningside College’s Jared Wildeboer in the night session.

In other action late Thursday and during Friday’s early session, Eddie Ortiz lost in the wrestleback at 125 to Northwestern College’s Angelo Quintana by Decision, 14-8. Matt Scheve pinned Dickinson State’s Robert Meador at 4:57 at 141 before dropping a 12-3 Major Decision against Southern Oregon’s Kyle Wirkuty in the backdraw.

Jake Shirley lost a 9-7 Decision to Missouri Valley College’s Nico Martinez at 157 and Nick Sasfy lost a 4-3 Decision to Oklahoma City’s Tyson Campbell at 174. Cody Linton dropped a 19-15 Decision to Missouri Valley’s Josh Manu at 184.

Also at 184 Scott Stewart lost by Technical Fall, 16-1, against Southern Oregon’s Austin Vandeford in the winner’s bracket and then dropped a 13-9 Decision to Manu in the wrestleback.
