Sandefer, Hunt, Linton all win at CU Open

LEBANON, Tenn. – Steven Sandefer, Zeke Hunt and Cody Linton all won their respective weight classes and Jake Williams and Michael Gonzalez both finished second, leading the wrestling teams on Saturday at the Cumberland Open at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center.

Sandefer, a junior from Mishawaka, Ind., swept through five matches at 149 rather easily, pinning Chris Baird from the University of the Cumberlands in just 14 seconds, posting a 10-0 Major Decision versus Campbellsville University’s Sam Conners, winning by Technical Fall, 17-1, against Appalachian State’s Caleb Swinson and recording a 7-3 Decision versus Chattanooga’s Jared Presley. In the finals Sandefer won a 9-4 Decision against Chattanooga’s Austin Sams.

Hunt, a junior from Dacula, Ga., posted four wins to take the top spot at 174, starting with a 6-0 Decision against Lindsey Wilson’s Rhodes Bell and pinned Shorter University’s Jared Rector at 4:53. He won by Fall at 1:15 versus Sean Bateman from the University of the Cumberlands before registering a 1-0 Decision over Lindsey Wilson’s Jameel Bryant in the finals.

Linton, a sophomore from Winters, Calif., received a bye in the first round at 184 before pinning Andrew Bratton at 3:24 and winning a 12-1 Major Decision over Lindsey Wilson’s Jake Maupin. In the finals Linton posted a 4-1 Decision against Lindsey Wilson’s Erick Gomez.

Sophomore Jake Williams lost in the finals at 141 after posting three straight victories as the No. 1 seed in the bracket. The Rio Rancho, N.M., native won a 9-3 Decision over Chattanooga’s Jacob Akins, pinned Calob Perkins from the University of the Cumberlands at 2:13 and won by Fall at 3:49 against Lindsey Wilson’s Keaton Thomas. In the finals Williams dropped a 7-4 Decision to Indiana University’s Trevor Moody.

Sophomore Michael Gonzalez posted three victories at 157 before losing in the finals. The Hesperia, Calif., native pinned Campbellsville’s Zach Rogich at 4:45 and Lindsey Wilson’s Jerry Contreras at 3:24 before winning a 3-2 overtime Decision against Shorter’s TJ Duncan. In the finals Gonzalez lost a 5-3 Decision versus Appalachian State’s Dyllan Cottrell.

Junior Jacob Shirley pinned Kenny Campbell from the University of the Cumberlands in 59 seconds at 165 before dropping a 14-4 Major Decision to Lindsey Wilson’s 14th-ranked Cadyn McKeeth. In the wrestleback Shirley, a Harrison, Ohio, native, pinned teammate David Capers at 3:43 and then won by Fall at 2:15 against another teammate, Brian Shockley, in the third-place match.

Shockley won two matches in the main draw, pinning Lindsey Wilson’s Court Mace at 1:18 and posting a 10-1 Major Decision against Shorter’s Seth Broome before dropping a 10-1 Major Decision against sixth-ranked Zach Barkett from the University of the Cumberlands. In the wrestleback Shockley, a freshman from Leeds, Ala., recorded an 8-5 Decision against Lindsey Wilson’s Taylor Doan before falling to Shirley.

Cumberland takes on 11th-ranked University of the Cumberlands in a dual match on Tuesday at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center at 7 p.m.
