LEBANON, Tenn. – Cody Linton dropped a 5-4 Decision in the semifinals of the main draw at 184 and finished fourth overall while Jake Williams and Zeke Hunt both lost matches in the wrestleback for Cumberland in the morning session Saturday at the 56th Annual NAIA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.
Linton, the Winters, Calif., native, lost a hard-fought Decision to Lindsey Wilson’s Jameel Bryant in the semifinals. The sophomore won a 6-0 Decision against Life University’s Trey Hicks in the wrestleback but lost a 7-6 Decision to Montana State-Northern’s Toby Cheff in the third-place match.
Williams was pinned by Campbellsville University’s Brandon Westerman at 1:33 and then dropped a 5-3 Decision to Simpson College’s Anthony Vegas in the fifth-place match.
Hunt also lost both of his matches on Saturday, the first a 10-0 Major Decision to Dickinson State’s Cameron Schrempp and then a 6-2 Decision against Oklahoma City’s Teagan Franco in the seventh-place match.
Cumberland stands in 13th place with 31.5 points heading into Saturday’s night session, which are only championship matches in the 10 classes. Morningside College, Baker College and Menlo College have one wrestler each in the finals and all three schools are currently behind the Bulldogs in the team scoring.
