CU loses 4-0 to KWC
LEBANON, Tenn. – Heidi Clayton and Nora Karvonen scored a pair of goals each and Allana Miller made one save to post a shutout for Kentucky Wesleyan in a 4-0 victory over Cumberland in women’s soccer action Friday afternoon at the CU Soccer Field.
Kentucky Wesleyan (3-0-1) scored once in the first half on a goal from Clayton. They added three more in the second half, the first from Clayton and then the final by by Karvonen. The Panthers were on the attack for most of the match, and Miller thwarted the chance Cumberland (1-3-0) put together.
KWC scored in the sixth minute on a goal by Clayton, a half-volley from atop the goalie box on a cross from Brittany Setters. The Panthers controlled play for much of the half, outshooting CU, 13-3, including several point-blank attempts against Bulldog keeper Kathy Onwu, who registered 11 saves in the match.
Cumberland’s best scoring chance came midway through the period by Simone Quinn, a long left-footer that was wide right.
KWC finally added to its lead in the 59th minute, again by Clayton, who beat Onwu low and right after a long through ball from Katie Allen beat an offsides trap some 40 yards from goal.
The Panthers added a goal from Nora Korvonen in the 77th minute, a left-footed one-timer from 16 yards on an assist from Allen again. Karvonen netted the final goal of the match in the 89th minute on a deflection that came right to her about six yards from the goal.
Cumberland hosts Lambuth next Friday at the CU Soccer Field at 1:30 p.m., the second of four home matches this month for the Bulldogs.
