Bulldogs drop TSAC opener, 2-0
Cumberland dropped a 2-0 decision at Bethel Univ. Tuesday in the TranSouth opener for both teams.

LEBANON, Tenn. – Bethel University scored twice in the first 12 minutes of the match and held off a flurry of chances in the second half by Cumberland in a 2-0 Wildcat victory Tuesday in women’s soccer action in McKenzie, Tenn.

Cumberland (1-4-0, 0-1-0) dropped its TranSouth opener despite controlling play for much of the match. The Bulldogs outshots Bethel, 9-4, in the second half, putting the pressure on BU keeper Jessica Coates, who made five saves in the match.

Rachel Rathbone put the Wildcats (1-5-0, 1-0-0) ahead in the 10th minute and Kelly-Jade Whelan scored again just over a minute later for the only goals of the match. Bethel had been outscored, 12-3, in dropping its first five matches of the year.

“It was a disappointing match because we had the majority of play and couldn’t find the back of the net, just as we did last week against Campbellsville [University],” head coach Gavin McKinney said after he returned to face hi9s former team. McKinney was an assistant at Bethel for the last three seasons.

Cumberland plays again September 29 at Judson College in Marion, Ala., beginning a stretch of four matches in eight days. The Bulldogs return home Sunday, October 3, to face Lyon College in a men’s and women’s doubleheader starting at Noon.
