LEBANON, Tenn. – Morgan Shaffer scored the game-tying goal in the 63rd minute, setting up the game-winner in the final minute by Rhianne Parsons, giving Cumberland a 2-1 season-opening victory in women’s soccer action Friday at the Golden Corral Classic in Barbourville, Ky.

Cumberland trailed 1-0 at the half after Union’s Renata Peixoto scored in the 15th minute. Neither club could muster any more offense before intermission, but Shaffer’s goal on an assist from Helena Dimantas Farias in the 63rd minute knotted the match at one.

CU keeper Hanna Sparks made a save on an Ashley Hall shot less than five minutes later, allowing the Bulldogs the opportunity for the game-winner. Sparks made five saves in the match, while Union keeper Patricia Nardy had six saves.

Parsons netted her first-career goal off a free kick in the final minute on an assist from Simone Quinn, giving the Bulldogs their first season-opening victory in at least four years.

The Bulldogs conclude play in the Golden Corral Classic Saturday at 2:30 p.m. versus the Univ. of the Cumberlands. CU takes on Georgetown College Saturday, September 4 at 2 p.m. in the home opener.
