LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland controlled play for much of the first half but gave up a late goal and Georgetown College’s Caitlin Williams posted a hat trick in a 4-1 Tigers victory Saturday at the CU Soccer Field.
Williams netted her first goal in the 35th minute and added scores in the 61st and 90th minutes for Georgetown (2-0-0), which outshot the Bulldogs (1-2-0), 25-8, overall in the match. Kelley Ach handed out two assists for GC.
After controlling play for much of the first half, the Bulldog defense left the midfield wide open and Georgetown took advantage, with Williams’ hard shot from 25 yards tipping off the hands of CU keeper Hanna Sparks and into the goal in the 35th minute.
The Tigers had several other good scoring chances late in the period but were unable to put the ball on frame.
Georgetown keeper Brooke Terrell did an excellent job of coming off her line to prevent good thru-balls from the Bulldogs from becoming scoring chances. Terrell also made a nice save low and to her left on CU’s best opportunity of the period off the foot of Helena Dimantas Farias.
Williams floated another shot just over the outstretched hands of Sparks in the 61st minute, this time assisted by Ach. Chelsea Farley put the Tigers ahead, 3-0, three minutes later on another assist from Ach, this one a hard shot from 15 yards to the right of the net.
Rhianne Parsons put Cumberland on the board in the 88th minute on an assist from Dimantas Farias, her third of the year, but Williams recorded her final goal with just 22 seconds remaining. For her efforts Parsons was named the Music City Star of the Game.
Cumberland next plays Campbellsville University at home at 2 p.m. on Thursday, September 16.
