LEBANON, Tenn. – Taylor Nay scored a goal and assisted on another, as Cumberland controlled possession from start-to-finish and completely dominated play in a 3-0 victory over St. Catharine College on a windy Thursday here at Lindsey Donnell Stadium-Kirk Field.
With the victory Cumberland (12-2-0, 6-1-0 Mid-South) tied the school-record for victories in a season with three regular season matches remaining. The Bulldogs missed numerous scoring chances in close and SCC keeper Maggie Grieser made several nice saves (10 in all) in what could have been a much different score.
CU outshot the Patriots (8-4-2, 5-3-0) by a wide margin, 33-4, and hit the crossbar twice, but scored twice in the first half and again late in the match for the win.
Shauna Gilpin netted her 11th goal of the year in the 23rd minute, taking a long pass from Nay and finding the back of the net from about six yards out down the right side. Nay was on the receiving end in the 42nd minute, this one from Kelsey Langille, with the freshman’s shot from 10 yards beating Grieser.
Kaitlin Phillips hit the crossbar from 20 yards in the first half as well and Simone Quinn’s header early in the second period also found the wood-work. Rhianne Parsons finally tallied for the squad after the break, with her bending shot from 25 yards sailing over Grieser’s head in the 76th minute.
Cumberland heads to the University of Pikeville on Sunday for an 11 a.m. CT match before its final home match of the year against Shawnee State on Saturday, October 27.
