LEBANON, Tenn. – Shauna Gilpin scored early and Beth Morgan added some insurance late, as 13th-ranked Cumberland defeated Campbellsville, 2-0, in women’s soccer action here Tuesday at Lindsey Donnell Stadium-Kirk Field in a match delayed 93 minutes because of weather in the first half.
Neither team could muster much offense in the early going before thunder, then lightning and eventually a short burst of hard rain delayed the match in the 15th minute. Continual lightning finally subsided and the match resumed with the Bulldogs starting quickly, as Gilpin netted her third goal of the season in the 17th minute on an assist from Taylor Nay.
Cumberland created scoring chances for much of the day, outshooting the Tigers, 23-6, but Campbellsville keeper Brandie Hagerman made nine saves and cut off several good runs by coming well off her line to stop further opportunities for the Bulldogs (3-1-0, 1-0-0 Mid-South).
The Tigers best chance of the day came midway through the second half when Bailey McDonough lofted a shot from 25 yards that CU goalie Lindsay Kitson pinned against the crossbar. Kitson had a make a save on the rebound against Jessica Ralph and another shot from Hannah Harris sailed wide, preserving the 1-0 lead for CU.
Cumberland was finally able to get some breathing room in the 71st minute when Morgan took a pass down the leftside from Kaitlin Phillips. Morgan turned back inside and lofted a beautiful shot far post, over the outstretched arms of Hagerman for the third career goal for the defender and first since October 8, 2011.
Cumberland continues its current five-match homestand Saturday with a Noon kickoff against Trinity International. The Bulldogs also take on Union University at 3 p.m. on September 18.
