LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland senior Kaitlin Phillips was named the Tennessee Sports Writers Association Women’s Soccer Player of the Week after posting four goals and five assists in matches from September 15-21.
Phillips scored at least one goal in all three outings last week, including a 4-0 victory over No. 7 Davenport University. The midfielder netted the game-winner in a 2-0 victory at NCAA Division II Union University and also scored the first goal in the 4-0 win over Davenport. She added an assist on a corner kick versus Davenport as well.
The Edmonton, Alberta, native scored in the 39th and 73rd (penalty kick) minutes and assisted on the second, fifth, sixth and seventh goals in a 10-0 win versus Shawnee State, the last two goals also on corner kicks. She has netted all five of her goals this season over the last six matches. Phillips had not scored more than three goals in a season during her three previous campaigns.
She assisted on the game-winning goal in this week’s match against No. 13 Martin Methodist as well, with Reneé LaRose heading in Phillips’ corner kick in the first minute of extra time. Cumberland hosts St. Catharine College on Saturday, looking to improve on its 8-0-1 mark and No. 4 national ranking.
