LEBANON, Tenn. – Third-ranked Lindsey Wilson scored twice in the first half and never looked back, posting a 3-0 victory over 11th-ranked Cumberland in the quarterfinals of the 2014 NAIA Women’s Soccer National Championship, presented by the Sports Medicine Center at the Orthopaedic Group, P.C. on Wednesday night in Orange Beach, Ala.
The Bulldogs (17-4-1) end their season with the loss, the team’s third in the last five weeks to the Blue Raiders (16-3-3), who advance to take on Northwood [FL] University in the semifinals on Friday.
LWC’s Anna Vig collected a loose ball, dribbled twice to her right and fired from just outside the box, low and to the near post in the 26th minute, with the shot getting just past a diving Lindsay Kitson for a 1-0 Blue Raider advantage.
The back-breaker of the match may have come just before the half when Ayaki Shinada crossed high from wide left to the far post. Kitson came out for the ball but Lindsey Wilson’s Fabienne Rochaix deflected it before Kitson could reach it. The ball bounced toward the middle of the goal and Rochaix beat two CU defenders so the easy score in the 42nd minute and a 2-0 lead at the break.
Lindsey Wilson’s only goal of the second half came on a penalty kick drawn by Vig in the 63rd minute. Shinada buried the PK for the final goal of the match.
