Women's Soccer Season Preview
18th ranked Phoenix begin their season tomorrow on the road against Tennessee Wesleyan at 2 p.m.

LEBANON, Tenn.--The 2019 Cumberland University women's soccer team looks to build on a string of successful seasons, heading into the season. Coaches and student-athletes exude a spirit and intensity that is providing a constant source of motivation to strive for higher goals.

The Phoenix kick off their season tomorrow at Tennessee Wesleyan at 2 p.m. which head coach Brian Davies thinks will be a tough match and good gauge to see where they are.

"We are eager to get going tomorrow against a tough opponent especially over the last couple of years, said Davies. "They have given us great games and we are in for a battle."

The Phoenix are returning seven starters from last season headlined by Mid-South Conference Defensive Player of the Year and All-American Honorable Mention Sarah Haddock. They also return All-Mid-South Conference Second Team Midfielder Jennifer Segura, Defender Kenzie Vetter, and Forward Haley Stevens. Davies looks forward to how incoming freshmen and transfers will increase the level of competition in the team.

"Everybody is working hard. It has been nice to have the numbers we have this year." Davies continued, "We will be able to utilize a lot more players who might not have got some time in the past."

Cumberland faces five teams this year that are ranked or receiving votes in the NAIA Preseason Coaches' Poll, including tough road games against 6th ranked Lindsey Wilson and 7th ranked Martin Methodist. Davies believes the challenge will be good for the team and necessary to be able to advance in post season play.

"We are playing a really tough schedule again. The last couple of years we have been really close and we have had great seasons and beat great teams and we are just going to have to do that again. The teams in our conference now are getting really good, so in order for us to make the big jump we are going to have to take care of those teams." Finished Davies, "If we can do that we will put ourselves in great position at the end of the year."

CU opens up their home schedule Saturday August 31st vs RV MidAmerica Nazarene at 3 p.m.
