Phoenix Wins Opener Against Bulldogs

ATHENS, Tenn.--  A pair of goals in the second half from Kenzi Vetter and Sarah Haddock lead 18th ranked Cumberland (1-0-0) to victory in their season opener against RV Tennessee Wesleyan (0-1-0). 

Cumberland’s Sarah Haddock netted a penalty kick in the 53rd minute to put the lead to 1-0 but the Bulldogs matched it quickly with a goal from Julia Ruiz Vargas in the 56th minute of the game, Goal by Cumberland’s Kenzi Vetter in the 74th minute of the game gave the Phoenix an 2-1 lead, resulting in the win over the Bulldogs Saturday in Athens, Tenn.

The Phoenix outshot the Bulldogs, 15-8, with both teams collecting four shots on goal for each team, respectively.

Cumberland goalkeeper Michaela Hawthorne recorded three saves and allowed one goal.

The Phoenix are scheduled to play next Wednesday versus Bryan College at 3 p.m. and open up their home schedule next Saturday August 31st against MidAmerica Nazarene at 3 p.m.
