Women's Soccer tops Thomas More on Senior day

Lebanon, Tenn.-- No. 14 Cumberland comes out on top with a 3-1 win over Thomas More on senior day.

Ao Yamada, Gabby Jones, and Marie Bathe each contributed a goal to secure the Phoenix win. Senior Haley Stevens had a great last home appearance for Cumberland, assisting in two of the three goals.

The Saints got off to an early advantage, securing the first goal of the game off of a free kick taken by Sterre Harsveld van der Veen in the third minute of play. The power over the ball was split fairly evenly between the two teams at the beginning of the first half. The Phoenix played with a little more urgency towards the end and ultimately took eight first half shots compared to the Saints’ five.

In the last few minutes of the half, Ao Yamada and Gabby Jones secured back-to-back goals to gain a late-half lead. Yamada tied the match with her third goal of the season, set up nicely by Marie Bathe with a corner kick. Two minutes later, Haley Stevens fed Gabby Jones a ball that landed in the deep corner of Thomas More’s net, allowing Cumberland to go into halftime with a 2-1 advantage.

Cumberland’s defense played relentlessly for the entire second half to take away many potential shot opportunities for Thomas More.

Near the 75th minute mark, Marie Bathe sent a corner kick to Evelyn Jimenez, with which Jimenez set Bathe up to take a beautiful high corner shot from just outside of the Saints’ box. The insurance goal was Bathe’s fifth of the season.

Senior goalie Sabrina Graziano made three great saves in the match to protect the Phoenix victory.

Cumberland will have a stretch of games on the road before they enter the Mid-South Conference tournament, starting with a faceoff with Shawnee State University in Portsmouth, Ohio on October 19.
