Four different Phoenix score goals in 4-0 shutout over Shawnee State

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio–14-ranked Cumberland women’s soccer picks up a 4-0 win over Shawnee State featuring four different goal scorers in the conference road victory.

Cumberland (11-3-0, 6-2-0) picks up three points in the win to move up to second in the conference standings. Tennessee Southern and Lindsey Wilson were each ahead of Cumberland, tied for second, entering play today. Both teams play tonight as Tennessee Southern is on the road at Georgetown and Lindsey Wilson is at home against Bethel. Depending on the outcomes CU can be anywhere from second to fourth after today. 

The Phoenix put up two goals in the first half and added two more in the second half in a chilly match. CU took 24 shots in the contest, 12 of them were on goal. Keeper Sabrina Gratziano made three saves in net to get her fifth shutout of the season. 

Marie Bathe scored first for Cumberland on a free kick in the 27th minute. Sarah Haddock played a short outlet to Bathe and she fired a rocket to the upper 90 for a 1-0 lead. 

Six minutes later, Bathe played the ball to Grace Morris and Morris finished at the net for a 2-0 lead. The assist was Bathe’s 10th of the season, putting her 11th in the NAIA in assists. 

Haley Stevens scored in the 63rd minute to extend the Phoenix lead to 3-0. Ella Tuplin threw the ball in to Brenna Swiger and Swiger played it to the far post where Stevens headed it home. 

In the 75th minute, Swiger fired a shot off the crossbar, Macy Douglas had the rebound and also hit the crossbar and Gabby Jones was able to punch it in for the final goal of the game. It was Jones’ fifth goal of the season. 

Cumberland has just two matches left in the regular season. The Phoenix will travel to Georgetown on Sunday to take on the Tigers at noon and will close the 2022 regular season on the road at No. 7 Tennessee Southern in Pulaski next Thursday.
