CU falls to Bethel, 5-2

LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland won a pair of doubles matches but 18th-ranked Bethel posted four singles victories and defeated the 25th-ranked Bulldogs, 5-2, Saturday in women’s tennis action in the finals of the NAIA Qualifying Tournament in Springfield, Ill.

 
Cumberland (10-7) lost to the Wildcats by the same score at home just four days ago.
 
The Bulldogs won a pair of doubles outings, with eighth-ranked Natasha Yakimovich and Bea Mompó-Rebaque defeated Ayda Ardila and Juliana Costa, 8-5, at No. 1, and Courtney Schaub and Amber Johnson posted an 8-2 victory over Kim-Lea Dinh and Margot Creaseman at No. 2.
 
Bethel’s Marcela Santos and Karen Martinez won 8-3 at No. 2 over Emily Jacobs and Kerinn Meisenbach.
 
In singles the Wildcats won matches at Nos. 2-5, all in straight sets.
 
Costa defeated Mompó-Rebaque, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 2, while Santos posted a 6-0, 6-3, victory against Schaub at No. 3. Martinez won 6-0, 6-0, over Meisenbach at No. 4, and Dinh claimed a 6-3, 6-1, triumph against Jacobs at No. 5.
 
Ardila led ninth-ranked Yakimovich, 7-5, 0-1, at No. 1, while Johnson was leading at No. 6 for the Bulldogs, 6-2, 5-3, over Creaseman.
 
Cumberland plays at Brenau University in Gainesville, Ga., Wednesday at 2:30 p.m.
