Bulldogs drop opener at EKU

LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland’s women’s tennis team lost its season opener late Friday at Eastern Kentucky, 7-0, playing with just four players.
 
Cumberland (0-1) lost both doubles matches, one in a tiebreaker, and all four played singles outings to the Colonels (2-5).
 
In doubles EKU’s Catarina Branco and Alyze Pagal defeated Emily Jacobs and Amber Johnson, 8-2, at No. 2, and Jessica Albuquerque and Esmira Gheisary won 9-8 over CU’s Bea Mompó-Rebaque and Courtney Schaub at No. 1.
 
In singles Albuquerque won 6-1, 6-2, over Mompó-Rebaque, clinching the victory for the Colonels. Pagal won 6-3, 6-1, against Jacobs at No. 2, while Branco defeated Schaub, 4-6, 6-2, 10-5, at No. 3, and Gheisary won 6-1, 6-1, over Johnson at No. 4.
 
Cumberland plays at Western Kentucky on February 20 and at Belmont on February 26.
