Bulldogs sweep Bethel, 9-0

LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland won all three doubles matches handily and all six singles outings in straight sets, sweeping Bethel University, 9-0, in women’s tennis action Tuesday at the Tommy Gray Memorial Tennis Courts on the CU campus.

Cumberland (1-7) picked up its first win of the season, ending a seven-match losing streak this season. The Bulldogs started fast with doubles wins in all three matches.

Larissa Akari Miura and Courtney Schaub posted an 8-0 victory at No. 1 over Michella Douglas and Paige Martin, while Anita Rácz and Tais Lacerda Bezerra won 8-1 at No. 2 against Erica Peterson and Tori Barraco and Amber Johnson and Lindsey Gaither triumphed by the same score at No. 3 versus Alexandria Jackson and Connie Oliver.

In singles the Bulldogs won all six matches and dropped only five total games.

Akari Miura defeated Douglas, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1, while Schaub won, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2 against Peterson and Rácz posted the same score at No. 3 versus Martin. Johnson posted a 6-0, 6-1, victory at No. 4 over Oliver; Lacerda Bezerra defeated Barraco, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5; and Gaither posted a 6-0, 6-2, victory at No. 6 against Jackson. For her efforts Johnson was named the Music City Star of the Game.

Cumberland plays its next four matches on the road starting Friday at Tennessee Wesleyan. The Bulldogs will also take on 18th-ranked Lee University on Saturday.
