Bulldogs pull out 5-4 victory

LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland won the top two doubles matches and the top three singles outings and went on to defeat Alabama-Huntsville, 5-4, in women’s tennis action Saturday at the Tommy Gray Memorial Courts on campus.

The Bulldogs (2-6) won their second straight match and started with a doubles of doubles wins.

Courtney Schaub and Anita Rácz defeated Melanie Junod and Lina Carvajal, 8-5, at No. 1 and Alena Gizdić and Tais Lacerda Bezerra won 8-6 at No. 2 against Alejandra Pacheco and Adriana Buitrago. UAH’s Amanda Bevis and Kasi McDonald posted an 8-3 victory at No. 3 over Lindsay Gaither and Abby Wilson.

In singles CU won the top three singles matches to post the team victory.

Schaub defeated Junod, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 1, while Gizdić posted a 6-1, 6-3, win at No. 2 against Maria Lawton and Rácz won a 6-3, 6-0, decision over Carvajal at No. 3. UAH collected victories at Nos. 4-6, with Buitrago winning at No. 4 when Lacerda Bezerra retired because of injury, McDonald claimed a 6-1, 6-2, victory at No. 5 versus Wilson and Pacheco recorded a 6-2, 6-0, win at No. 6 over Gaither.

Cumberland plays at Georgetown College on Tuesday and at Bethel University on Thursday.
