Bulldogs fall in season opener at Belmont

LEBANON, Tenn. – Alena Gizdić posted a three-set victory in a super tiebreaker at No. 2 singles and Angelica Sepulveda and Franki Jecker won their doubles match, but Cumberland dropped a 6-1 decision to Belmont University on Friday in women’s tennis action at Centennial Sportsplex in Nashville, Tenn.

The Bulldogs (0-1) played with just five players, forfeiting the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles matches to the Bruins (2-3) and essentially giving the home team two points in the match.

Sepulveda and Jecker won 6-0 over Nikki Maciel and Abbie Mather for CU, but Belmont’s Laura Van Eeckhoudt and Kendall Warren recorded a 6-2 win at No. 1 against Gizdić and Antea Dedić.

In singles Van Eeckhoudt defeated Sepulveda, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 1, but Gizdić registered a 6-2, 4-6, 10-8 victory over Warren at No. 2. Maciel posted a 6-3, 6-4, triumph versus Dedić at No. 3, while Mather collected a 6-1, 6-1, win at No. 4 against Jecker and Ann Lauren Fiepke defeated Tais Lacerda Bezerra at No. 5, 6-1, 6-0.

Cumberland next competes at the AUM Spring Invitational on March 6-8 in Montgomery, Ala.
