Women's tennis falls in season opener

LEBANON, Tenn. – Belmont won both completed doubles matches and all six singles outings en route to a 7-0 victory over Cumberland in women’s tennis action Saturday evening at the Brentwood Swim and Tennis Club in Nashville, Tenn.

It was the first match of the spring for the Bulldogs, while Belmont improved to 3-4 overall this season.

Belmont’s Laura Van Eeckhoudt and Abbie Mather posted a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles over Gisela Amor Garcia and Tarsha de Souza while Ann Lauren Fiepke and Suzanne Stapler collected a 6-1 victory at No. 3 agfainst Franki Jecker and Trinidad Aguirre. CU’s Angelica Sepulveda and Alena Gizdić were tied at No. 1 doubles with Lindsey Whitehead and Kendall Warren.

In singles Whitehead outlasted Sepulveda, 7-6 (4), 6-2, at No. 1, while Van Eeckhoudt did not lose a game in a straight-set win over Gizdić at No. 2 and Warren collected a 6-3, 6-0, victory at No. 3 against de Souza.

Mather registered a 6-4, 6-4, win over Garcia at No. 4 and Stapler and Fiepke posted pro set victories at Nos. 5-6 against Jasmine Shankar and Aguirre.

Cumberland takes on Tennessee Wesleyan at home this Wednesday before heading to the AUM Spring Invitational on March 6-8 in Montgomery, Ala.
