Phoenix fall 5-4 to Middle Georgia

LEBANON, Tenn. – Twelfth-ranked Cumberland won a pair of doubles matches and Trinidad Aguirre and Sarah Edwards each posted singles wins, but Middle Georgia State took four singles outings in a 5-4 victory in women’s tennis Friday at the Green and Gold Invitational in Lawrenceville, Ga.

Cumberland faces fourth-ranked SCAD-Savannah on Saturday at 5 p.m. Central Time in the event.

The Phoenix (1-2) started the match with a pair of doubles victories, including an 8-5 triumph at No. 1 by the second-ranked duo of Angelica Sepulveda and Tarsha de Souza against Anastasiia Vasileva and Lara Persiani. CU’s Edwards and Franki Jecker also posted a 9-7 win at No. 3 versus Yannick Garcia and Shelby Ashley. The Knights (4-2) picked up an 8-5 victory at No. 2 from Preeti Gokhale and Nathalie Wenko over Aguirre and Jasmine Shankar.

In singles Vasileva outlasted 14th-ranked Sepulveda at No. 1, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5, while Persiani won 6-1, 6-1, against de Souza at No. 2. Wenko registered a 6-2, 6-3, victory at No. 4 versus Shankar and Garcia recorded a 6-3, 6-2, win at No. 6 over Jecker.

Aguirre overcame an early deficit for a victory at No. 3 against Gokhale, 6-7, 7-5, 6-2, while Edwards collected a 6-2, 6-0, win at No. 5 against Ashley.
