Women's tennis upsets No. 10 Indiana Wesleyan

LEBANON, Tenn. – Jessica Hernandez and Ksenija Dmitrovic won the final two singles matches on the court, both in three sets, helping 18th-ranked Cumberland to a 5-4 victory over No. 10 Indiana Wesleyan in women’s tennis action Saturday in Macon, Ga.

The Phoenix lost their first match of the Spring Break trip, 5-2, to 23rd-ranked University of Mobile late Friday after a lengthy rain delay during the day.

Cumberland won 2-of-3 doubles outings, but the Wildcats posted an 8-5 victory at No. 2 to start, with Maddie Bemisderfer and Thewuni Devaraja defeating Marianela Landi and Dmitrovic.

Hernandez and Ainhoa Garijo Garrido collected an 8-6 victory at No. 1 versus Lizzie Bauss and Alex Mella and Stefanie Navaratnam and Kylie Humphrey gave the Phoenix a 2-1 edge in the match with an 8-3 triumph at No. 3 versus Marissa Klein and Lena Golz.

Garijo Garrido made quick work of Bauss at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-3, but Indiana Wesleyan won the next three matches to take a 4-3 overall lead.

Devaraja defeated Humphrey, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 5 while Golz won 6-1, 7-5, versus Landi at No. 4 and Klein posted a 6-1, 6-1, victory at No. 6 over Ana María Collazos.

Hernandez evened the match with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-0, win at No. 2 against Mella and Dmitrovic outlasted Bemisderfer at No. 3, 7-6, 3-6, 6-2, for the upset.

Late Friday Mobile took 2-of-3 doubles and won three singles matches in straight sets in a 5-2 victory over the Phoenix.

Emily Chang and Sina Marchione collected an 8-2 win at No. 1 over Hernandez and Garijo Garrido while Maria Toledo and Yaroslava Pyrkh defeated Humphrey and Navaratnam, 8-3, at No. 3. Dmotrovic and Landi picked up a point for CU with an 8-2 triumph at No. 2 against Marina Capitani and Claire Travis.

Garijo Garrido evened the overall match with a win at No. 2, taking the first set, 6-1, before Capitani retired, but Chang collected a 6-3, 6-2, victory at No. 1 versus Hernandez. Toledo defeated Landi, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 3 and Marchione won 6-4, 6-1, at No. 4 over Humphrey.

Navaratnam was down a set at No. 5 to Pyrkh but Collazos won the first set at No. 6 against Travis.

Cumberland’s scheduled match Sunday against Coastal Georgia was canceled because of rain. The Phoenix finish the trip with matches Monday against 19th-ranked Loyola University and Tuesday versus 12th-ranked Middle Georgia State.
